For an AliExpress order to Serbia, €50 is an important customs number—but it is easy to misunderstand what it means. The current Serbian rules do not turn a small marketplace purchase into a tax-free parcel. VAT still applies to commercial postal imports even when customs duty does not.

That makes the Serbian buying decision less about memorizing a delivery range and more about knowing which costs belong to the item, which belong to customs and which may be charged by the postal operator. Once those layers are separated, a cheap listing is much easier to evaluate.

The €50 line is not a tax-free line

Serbian Customs states that import duties are payable on low-value non-commercial postal items when their actual value exceeds €50 in dinar equivalent. VAT, however, is paid on those items regardless of value. For an ordinary AliExpress purchase, that means “below €50” should not be read as “no import tax.”

There is a separate €70 exemption for qualifying low-value shipments sent free of charge from one individual abroad to another individual in Serbia. That gift rule does not describe a normal purchase from a marketplace seller, so it should not be used to budget an AliExpress order.

How customs value changes the calculation

For postal consignments in the simplified group above the customs-duty threshold and up to the limit covered by that procedure, the Serbian Customs postal FAQ describes a uniform 10% import-duty rate plus 20% VAT. The important detail is the calculation base, not just the percentages.

Serbian Customs gives examples in which postage to Serbia is included in customs value for an item above €50 when shipping is charged separately. Import duty is calculated on that customs value; the duty is then added to the customs value to form the VAT base. The calculation is made in dinars using the official National Bank of Serbia exchange rate.

For items up to €50, the same Customs FAQ says customs duty is not charged, but VAT is still calculated; its example also treats separately stated postage differently for that low-value calculation. Do not reuse the arithmetic for a different order without checking how Customs classifies and values that shipment.

The Post can add service charges of its own

Customs duty and VAT are not the only amounts that can appear at delivery. Current Post of Serbia guidance says the postal operator may charge for representation in preparing an electronic customs declaration or presenting a parcel for customs inspection, as well as payment commission and storage where applicable under its tariff.

Those are postal-service charges, not an AliExpress customs rate. They also should not be confused with the 10% import duty or 20% VAT described by Customs. If the landed cost matters, keep the order confirmation, item price and shipping charge so you can distinguish the parts of the final amount.

Serbian Customs also provides an electronic debt-calculation record for recipients. That can be useful when you need to see the customs calculation attached to a specific shipment rather than trying to reconstruct it from a seller message.

Track the handoff, not a fixed delivery promise

The old Serbia page used a country-wide delivery range and broad assumptions about standard, economy and express shipping. A current order is better planned from the estimate and tracking attached to the selected listing after the Serbian address is set.

If the parcel enters the Post of Serbia network with a supported identifier, the official Track and Trace system can show status and delivery events. Its current guidance lists registered international items, parcels and EMS among trackable categories. That does not mean every AliExpress shipment uses Pošta Srbije; another operator may handle a different route.

RSD display and card conversion are separate questions

A price shown in Serbian dinars is useful for comparison, but it does not guarantee the exchange rate used by the card issuer if the transaction is processed in another currency. National Bank of Serbia card guidance notes that when a card debits a dinar account for a foreign-currency purchase, conversion costs depend on the currency and the issuer.

Read the final amount and transaction currency at checkout, then use your bank’s current conversion and card terms for the part AliExpress does not control. A declined payment is therefore a checkout-and-issuer question, not proof that one payment method is universally unavailable in Serbia.

Some goods leave the simplified postal path

Value is not the only customs question. Serbian Customs says a shipment can require regular treatment when the declared information does not match the actual goods or when the contents are subject to import restrictions or prohibitions. Its examples include medicines, medical devices, weapons, ammunition and narcotics.

For an ordinary buyer, the useful lesson is to check unusual or regulated categories before ordering rather than after the parcel reaches customs. Marketplace availability is not the same thing as permission to import a product into Serbia.

Keep the product description, invoice or order record, amount paid and tracking number until delivery. Those documents help connect the parcel with the purchase if Customs needs to verify value or contents.

Where the €50 line changes the deal

In Serbia, a small change in order value can change whether customs duty joins the VAT calculation. A €49 order and a €51 order therefore should not be compared from listing price alone: shipping and any postal handling charges can move the landed-cost picture further.
