The biggest change for U.S. AliExpress buyers is not a new coupon or delivery option. It is the end of the old assumption that a small overseas order will automatically enter duty free under the $800 de minimis rule. That shortcut is no longer current for ordinary low-value imports.

For a U.S. buyer, that shifts the comparison. The product price still matters, but so do the item’s classification, country of origin, entry route and any duties, taxes or fees attached to the import. A listing that looks cheap before checkout may need a second look once the import path is considered.

Forget the old $800 de minimis shortcut

CBP says low-value goods from all countries are no longer eligible for the former $800 de minimis administrative exemption for ordinary shipments. The nationwide suspension first took effect in late August 2025, and CBP’s June 2026 regulations made the suspension indefinite for both non-postal and international-mail imports.

For non-postal shipments valued at $800 or less, CBP now requires an appropriate formal or informal entry rather than the former de minimis entry treatment. The June 2026 rule says merchandise that would previously have used the exemption must use another appropriate entry type.

International mail is also covered by an indefinite suspension. CBP’s separate postal rule established a new postal informal-entry process, so a small parcel entering through the international postal network should not be treated as automatically duty free simply because its declared value is below $800.

Duty depends on the merchandise and where it comes from

There is no safe universal percentage to add to every AliExpress order. CBP uses the Harmonized Tariff Schedule to determine duty treatment, and the applicable amount can depend on the product classification, value, country of origin and other trade measures that apply to that merchandise.

That is why a current U.S. guide should not recycle an old China-only tariff percentage as though it applied to every listing. AliExpress sellers can offer goods from different origins and categories, and additional duties can change independently of the marketplace. If the duty exposure matters to the purchase, identify the product and origin before trying to estimate the landed cost.

The same principle applies to restricted goods. CBP warns that some products are prohibited while others require licenses, permits or compliance with another federal agency. A product being visible on AliExpress does not prove that it can enter the United States without additional requirements.

How the parcel enters the U.S. changes the process

The carrier route matters more than it did under the old de minimis shortcut. CBP’s current rules distinguish international mail from other modes of entry, even though both are now subject to the suspension. Postal shipments use the mail-entry framework; express carriers and other non-postal shipments use the applicable formal or informal entry process.

For mailed goods, CBP explains that a package can be examined at a CBP mail facility and that duty and fees, when owed, may be collected through the postal delivery process. If the parcel later receives a USPS-compatible tracking number, USPS Tracking can show the domestic delivery events. That does not mean every AliExpress parcel is handed to USPS; the final-mile carrier depends on the logistics route attached to the order.

With an express or private-carrier route, the carrier or broker may handle customs entry and collect amounts associated with the import before or during delivery. Do not assume that two listings with similar delivery estimates will have the same customs-handling process.

Choose shipping with the import path in mind

Start with the exact product and U.S. destination. A seller can offer different shipping methods or estimates for different variants, addresses or inventory locations, so use the details shown after the real destination is set rather than an old country-wide delivery range.

Compare the shipping fee, estimated arrival, tracking visibility and return terms together. Pay for the order that is actually on the checkout screen

A U.S.-dollar display is convenient, but it should not replace a final checkout check. Confirm the amount, transaction currency, shipping charge and any tax or fee shown before authorizing payment. If your payment account can add foreign-transaction or conversion charges, the issuer’s current terms determine those costs.

Avoid relying on a static list of “AliExpress payment methods in the USA.” The methods shown can vary by account, transaction and checkout state, and the payment provider still decides whether an authorization succeeds. For a first order, make the address equally specific. Select the United States before comparing shipping and enter the address you actually use for delivery. Keep enough information to explain the import

The current customs environment makes the order record more valuable than it used to be. Keep the order confirmation, product description, amount paid, tracking number and any information the listing provides about the merchandise and country of origin. Those details can help if a carrier or CBP needs information for entry, classification or value.

For a higher-value, regulated or unusual product, check the relevant CBP and agency requirements before ordering. Electronics, food, cosmetics, medical products and other categories can involve rules outside the ordinary customs-duty calculation, so the lowest listing price should not be the only screening step.

Do not treat a seller’s “tax free” message or a low declared value as a substitute for the current U.S. rules. The importer and carrier still have to deal with the entry process that applies to the actual merchandise and route.

The import path belongs in the budget

AliExpress can still be useful in the United States, but the old low-value-import shortcut has disappeared. The most useful comparison now starts with the merchandise and origin, then adds the shipping route, tracking quality and the entry costs that may apply.

Before paying, ask whether the exact item ships to your address on a route you understand, whether the product has any import restriction, what information you have about origin and classification, and whether the final cost still makes sense without assuming an automatic $800 exemption. That gives you a better basis for comparing AliExpress with another seller than the checkout price alone.
