For UK shoppers, the most important distinction is the value of the imported consignment. HM Revenue & Customs says that when goods located outside the UK are sold through an online marketplace to customers in Great Britain in consignments worth £135 or less, the marketplace is generally responsible for charging and accounting for UK VAT at the point of sale. Above £135, normal import VAT and customs rules apply.

That threshold applies to the total consignment, not to each line in the basket. If several items are shipped together, their combined value can change the tax treatment. Northern Ireland also has different rules in some situations, so buyers there should check the destination-specific treatment rather than assuming Great Britain rules are identical.

Use £135 as the first decision point

For orders near or above £135, allow for the possibility of import VAT, customs duty and carrier handling before deciding that the overseas price is cheaper. HMRC’s marketplace VAT guidance is the best reference when the tax treatment is unclear.

Then compare dispatch origin with return risk

Look at the final amount after VAT, shipping and discounts, then check whether the item is dispatched from the UK, another region, or directly from overseas. Returns deserve extra attention on bulky or expensive products. A low purchase price can be offset by international return postage, so check who pays return shipping and whether a local return address is offered. Keep screenshots of the listing, exact variant, warranty wording and delivery promise until the order is complete.

Use a complete delivery address and a mobile number that the carrier can reach. For UK buyers, the £135 threshold and the return route are more useful decision points than the size of the advertised discount.
