Romanian buyers are now shopping under an EU low-value import regime that older AliExpress guides do not describe correctly. Customs treatment for parcels below €150 changed in 2026, while VAT, the shipping route and the carrier handling the Romanian leg still affect what happens after checkout.
That makes the useful question less “does AliExpress work in Romania?” and more “what will this exact order look like by the time it reaches me?” Start with the destination and checkout details, then judge the listing as an imported purchase rather than as a price shown in search.

What changed for low-value parcels entering Romania
The familiar shortcut that parcels below €150 are simply customs-duty free is outdated. Under the current temporary EU rule, goods in consignments valued below €150 are subject to a fixed €3 customs duty when the import is handled through the Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) or the goods are in a qualifying postal consignment. The Council of the EU explains that the €3 amount is levied on each different item category, identified by its tariff sub-heading, within a consignment.
That detail matters when a cart contains several types of goods. A parcel under €150 does not automatically mean “€3 total,” and the temporary rule should not be turned into a universal AliExpress fee. The regulation covers both the IOSS-related case and qualifying postal consignments under this simplified temporary treatment.
For a Romanian buyer, the practical result is simple: do not use an old article, forum post or seller message to predict customs from the order value alone. The product category, the way VAT is handled and the customs treatment attached to the actual import all matter.
VAT and checkout: separate the tax from the product price
VAT is a separate question from customs duty. The EU’s IOSS system remains part of the current e-commerce VAT framework and allows businesses to declare and remit VAT for imports of low-value goods. That does not mean every AliExpress order to Romania is handled identically, so the checkout should show you how the particular order is being charged before you authorize payment.
Romania’s current standard VAT rate is 21% for taxable transactions that are not exempt or subject to the reduced rate. A reduced 11% rate applies to defined categories, so it would be misleading to add 21% mechanically to every possible product. For an ordinary marketplace purchase, check what tax is shown at checkout and keep the order record that shows the amount collected.
The same caution applies to currency. A price displayed in Romanian lei is useful for comparing listings, but it does not by itself prove how your card will settle the transaction. Read the final amount and transaction currency on the payment screen, then check your issuer’s conversion terms if the charge is not in the currency you expect. PoKupar’s AliExpress payment guide explains the general checkout flow without assuming one fixed payment-method list for Romania.
If you are setting up a first order, make the delivery details equally concrete. Select Romania before comparing sellers and use the address you will actually receive parcels at. PoKupar’s address guide can help with the AliExpress fields, but the street, locality, postal code and reachable contact details must match the real destination.

Shipping route can outweigh a small discount
A delivery estimate only becomes useful after Romania and the actual address are set. Different sellers or product variants can offer different logistics even when the item looks identical in search. Compare the shipping fee, the estimate attached to the listing, whether tracking is included and the return terms before deciding that the cheapest product price is the best offer.
This is also where timing can be part of the buying decision. If the purchase is not urgent, PoKupar’s AliExpress Sales Calendar can help you see whether a major sale period is close enough to justify waiting. Compare any discount with the delivered cost, not with the product price in isolation.
When AliExpress Standard Shipping is offered, PoKupar’s guide to AliExpress Standard Shipping explains how that service fits into the wider logistics chain. It should not be used as a promise of a fixed Romania delivery time. The estimate attached to the exact order remains more useful than an old country-wide range.

Tracking and the Romanian handoff
For a cross-border order, tracking is most useful as a chain of custody. Start with the tracking number and carrier information in the AliExpress order record. PoKupar’s AliExpress tracking guide can help interpret common international events and apparent pauses between export, customs and local delivery.
If a shipment is handed to Poșta Română and its tracking number is supported by the Romanian postal system, Poșta Română’s Track & Trace service can show events for the domestic leg. The national operator notes that its own standard tracking format uses 13 characters, while codes from other operators can differ. This is a local tracking option, not evidence that every AliExpress parcel is delivered by Poșta Română.
A quiet period in the marketplace timeline therefore needs context. Check the last international event, the carrier named for the order and any recognized Romanian tracking result before concluding that the parcel is lost. A private courier may handle the final mile instead, depending on the route sold with that listing.
Keep the order record for customs questions
Romanian Customs states that imported goods from outside the EU are subject to VAT and customs declarations even at low values, apart from specific non-commercial gift rules that do not describe a normal marketplace purchase. For an AliExpress order, keep evidence that connects what you bought with what entered the country: the order confirmation, product description, price paid, payment record and tracking number.
Those records are especially useful when a parcel contains several products, a higher-value item or something whose tariff classification is not obvious. A seller label such as “tax free” does not replace the customs rules that apply in Romania, and the marketplace price should not be treated as proof that nothing can be collected or checked at import.
If the order is expensive, unusual or potentially regulated, review the current Romanian Customs and EU guidance before paying. That is more reliable than trying to memorize one threshold or percentage and applying it to every product category.
A Romania order is a landed-cost comparison
AliExpress can still offer Romanian shoppers broad selection and competitive prices, but the useful comparison is between complete orders. One listing may cost slightly more yet have clearer tracking, a better route and a more predictable checkout total. Another may look cheaper until shipping, currency conversion or import treatment is considered.
Before paying, make sure you can answer the questions that are specific to this order: does the chosen variant actually ship to your Romanian address, what VAT or customs amount is already shown, what currency will be charged, which route is being sold, and how will you follow the parcel after it reaches Romania? If those pieces are clear, the price comparison becomes much more meaningful.
