Dutch shoppers who buy from outside the EU need to pay closer attention to import costs than they did earlier in 2026. The old customs-duty exemption for low-value e-commerce parcels has ended, so even a small order can now carry a customs charge in addition to VAT and any carrier administration fee.

The new €3 low-value customs duty

Dutch Customs states that the exemption from customs duty for consignments up to €150 ended on 1 July 2026. Under the temporary EU system, a flat €3 customs duty can apply to low-value imported e-commerce goods, calculated by item category. VAT remains separate. For qualifying low-value sales, the Import One-Stop Shop system can allow VAT to be collected by the seller or marketplace at checkout.

The useful buyer check is therefore not “is the parcel under €150?” but “what taxes and charges have already been collected, and what could still be due on arrival?” Save the checkout invoice so you can compare it with any later request from the postal or courier operator.

EU warehouse versus non-EU shipment

A listing that genuinely ships from within the EU follows a different import path from a parcel entering the EU from China or another non-EU country. Check the actual ship-from location on the selected variation before buying; do not infer it from a short delivery estimate or a seller banner.

For time-sensitive purchases, an EU-stock option can be worth a higher price because the route is shorter and import handling is simpler. For low-cost items where delivery speed is not important, a direct international shipment may still offer better value after the new duty is included.

Delivery information should be boring and precise
