Canadian buyers need to distinguish between goods arriving by mail and goods arriving by courier. The tax and duty treatment can differ by route and origin, and a low-value exemption does not mean every inexpensive online order reaches the door without additional charges.

Mail imports: what the C$20 rule means

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) states that most goods imported by mail are subject to applicable duties and taxes. For many postal imports valued at C$20 or less, duty and tax relief can apply, subject to exclusions. Once the value is above that threshold, applicable duty and tax can be assessed on the full value rather than only the amount above C$20.

Canada Post can also charge a handling fee when it collects duty or tax on an international mail item. For the buyer, that makes the delivered price a better comparison than the AliExpress product price alone.

CBSA's courier guidance includes separate low-value treatment for qualifying courier shipments, with thresholds that can differ depending on where the goods are imported from and the type of tax or duty involved. Courier companies may also charge brokerage or administration fees that are not government taxes.

If a listing offers several shipping methods, check whether the parcel is likely to arrive through the postal network or an express courier. A faster courier option can be worthwhile for an urgent order, but its extra service fees may make a low-cost product poor value.

Deals and coupons help only when they survive the carrier route. A discount can make a small order more attractive, but postal handling, duty or tax, and courier brokerage can quickly absorb a modest saving. Compare the price after any coupon with the likely delivered total, and do not pay extra for faster courier service if the added fee erases the discount.

Do not assume a Canadian-looking storefront means domestic stock

Check the actual ship-from location on the selected AliExpress variation. A product page can be displayed in Canadian dollars while the goods still ship from abroad. The relevant questions are where the goods are located, how they will enter Canada and what the final carrier may charge.

For expensive purchases, compare the imported total with Canadian retail, including warranty and returns. An international return can easily erase a modest saving.
