AliExpress can be useful in Brunei when the local price or selection is not competitive, but the important part is not simply whether a seller accepts the order. The real buyer questions are whether the item can be imported, what the parcel may face at customs, whether extra duty or excise can apply, and whether the delivery option shown at checkout is practical for the purchase.

This guide focuses on those Brunei-specific checks. It does not assume that every listing ships to Brunei or that one fixed delivery time applies to every order.

Check delivery before paying

Treat the delivery estimate on the actual AliExpress listing and at checkout as the useful estimate for that order. Seller location, shipping method, consolidation, carrier handling and customs can all affect the final timeline, so a single countrywide promise such as “20–45 days” is too broad to rely on.

Before paying, check four things:

Whether the seller currently ships that exact product to your Brunei address.

The estimated delivery window shown for the selected shipping method.

Whether tracking is included and remains useful after the parcel reaches Brunei.

Whether the price difference still makes sense after any possible import charges or clearance costs.

For a time-sensitive purchase, the lowest product price is not automatically the best option. A clearer shipping method and usable tracking can be worth more than a small saving.

How Brunei customs treats online parcels

Brunei’s Royal Customs and Excise Department says imported goods generally require customs declaration. Its import/export procedure lists goods arriving by post as an exception, except for dutiable goods. This declaration rule is separate from the BND400 Customs Import Duties exemption described below.

Separately, Brunei Customs’ General Exemption from Customs Import Duties applies to qualifying goods imported by air courier service or Express Mail Service. The published conditions are that the goods are not cigarettes, tobacco or intoxicating liquor; the total value of the goods on a cost, insurance and freight (CIF) basis does not exceed BND400 per consignment; and the goods are imported through Brunei International Airport, Air Cargo Berakas or the Mail Processing Centre, Berakas.

This BND400 provision is an import-duty exemption, not a customs-declaration exemption. Declaration requirements are governed separately by the import/export procedure above. The exemption also does not override other applicable excise duties or prohibited, restricted and controlled-goods requirements.

What can trigger duty or excise

Brunei does not apply one universal import percentage to every AliExpress order. The Royal Customs and Excise Department classifies goods under the customs and excise tariff, and different product categories can have different treatment.

For example, the Customs tax guidance lists some categories with import duty, some with excise duty, and some with both rates shown as nil for a particular tax. Electrical goods, certain auto parts, cosmetics, watches, jewellery, footwear and other categories can have different tariff treatment.

The practical rule is simple: if the purchase is expensive enough that an unexpected charge would matter, check the current customs classification before ordering instead of assuming that all small consumer goods are treated alike.

Controlled and restricted products need extra attention

Some products cannot be treated like an ordinary low-risk parcel. Brunei Customs publishes lists of prohibited, restricted and controlled goods, and some categories require approval from another government agency before import.

Examples include certain medicines and health products, cosmetics, food, plants, telecommunications equipment, vehicles, publications and other regulated goods. Tobacco and vaping products are also subject to specific restrictions.

If your AliExpress order falls into a regulated category, verify the permit or approval requirement before buying. A seller being willing to dispatch the product does not mean Brunei authorities will allow it to enter without additional conditions.

Keep your order records

For an international order, keep the AliExpress invoice or order confirmation, payment record and tracking details until the parcel is delivered. Customs guidance lists the commercial invoice and transport documents among the core records used for import declarations, and additional documents may be requested depending on the goods.

If Customs or the carrier asks for evidence of value or contents, having the order page and payment record available can make the process easier than trying to reconstruct the purchase later.

Payments and currency

Use the payment options AliExpress actually offers for your account and order at checkout. If the transaction is converted from another currency, the final amount charged by your card issuer can differ from the displayed product price because the issuer’s exchange rate or foreign-transaction terms may apply.

For a large purchase, compare the final checkout total rather than judging the deal from the headline item price alone.

Sales, coupons and timing your order

AliExpress discounts can make cross-border buying more attractive, but a discount is useful only if the final delivered cost still makes sense. Compare the normal price, coupon conditions, shipping cost and possible import charges together.

The seller’s rating, recent reviews and product specifications match what you actually intend to buy.

You will keep the invoice, payment record and tracking details until delivery.

The main advantage of AliExpress in Brunei is access to a wider product range and potentially competitive prices. The safest way to use it is to evaluate the whole transaction — product, seller, shipping, import rules and final cost — rather than treating the listing price as the only decision point.
