AliExpress shoppers in Belgium need to compare more than the product-card price. Before paying, confirm the exact variation and ship-from location, review the delivery route and seller history, check VAT and the current import-cost treatment, and decide whether the return path still makes sense against an EU alternative. The July 2026 customs change affects that calculation, but it is one part of a broader shopping and ordering guide.

The €150 exemption is gone for e-commerce parcels

Belgium's Federal Public Service Finance notes the temporary €3 duty for low-value B2C e-commerce consignments. The EU-wide rule is more precise: from 1 July 2026, €3 is levied on each different item category identified by tariff sub-heading in a parcel under €150. Belgian customs' current e-commerce guidance covers the national context, and the Council of the EU's official explanation sets out the category-based rule.

VAT is still a separate layer. Belgium's telecom and postal regulator notes that VAT may be collected at checkout through IOSS for goods up to €150; otherwise it may be collected by the carrier at delivery. BIPT's consumer guidance explains VAT collection.

Count tariff categories, not physical pieces

A cart with several physical pieces does not necessarily mean €3 multiplied by every piece. In the Council's example, one silk blouse plus two wool blouses count as two distinct tariff categories because they have different tariff sub-headings, so the interim duty is €6. The relevant count is the number of different tariff categories represented in the parcel.

Keep the invoice and checkout breakdown so you can see whether VAT was collected by the seller. If a carrier asks for more money, separate VAT, customs duty and the carrier's own clearance fee before assuming the amount is a duplicate tax.

Ship-from location can move the order into a different customs scenario

Check the ship-from option for the exact variation you selected. Goods genuinely dispatched from stock already in EU free circulation follow a different route from a parcel sent directly from China, but a generic "EU warehouse" label is not enough if the selected size, color or model ships elsewhere.

After dispatch, follow the tracking events through the Belgian carrier handoff. If the parcel needs customs action, the transport company is usually the practical point of contact for payment or missing-document requests.

Returns deserve a stricter comparison than before

For electronics, clothing or other goods that are easy to buy inside the EU, compare the AliExpress landed cost with an EU retailer that offers simpler returns. A small product-price advantage can disappear once category-based duty, VAT, shipping and return postage are included.

A Belgium-focused pre-check

Before paying, confirm the exact variation, tariff categories represented in the cart, seller history, recent reviews, ship-from location, delivery method, VAT treatment and return terms. If the final cost is close to an EU alternative, the easier warranty and return path may be worth more than the AliExpress discount.
