Austria’s Ministry of Finance advises online shoppers to include import VAT, customs charges, shipping and carrier service fees when comparing goods sent from outside the EU. Its current e-commerce guidance also reflects the July 2026 change: for consignments up to €150 from non-EU countries, a flat customs duty of €3 per item generally applies, while import VAT remains payable unless handled through the relevant purchase-time VAT scheme.

That makes Austria a good example of why AliExpress prices should be judged at checkout rather than from the search-results card. A low product price can be offset by several small import and handling costs.

Keep proof when VAT was collected at purchase

For eligible low-value orders using IOSS, VAT can be charged during the purchase. Keep the order confirmation showing what was paid. The Austrian customs guidance notes that delivery companies can charge service fees for customs declarations and advancing duties. Those fees can matter on inexpensive orders, so include them in the comparison before choosing a seller purely on price.

Restricted goods need a pre-purchase check

Some products can face import restrictions regardless of price. Austrian customs specifically highlights categories such as medicines and protected animal or plant products. For regulated, branded or unusual goods, check the applicable rules before ordering rather than assuming marketplace availability means import is permitted.
