Singapore's GST rules make checkout unusually important. For many low-value online purchases, tax can be collected by the overseas seller or marketplace before the parcel is shipped. For other shipments, GST can be assessed when the goods enter Singapore. Understanding which route applies helps you avoid treating a later tax request as a duplicate automatically.
The S$400 low-value goods rule
Singapore Customs defines low-value goods as goods with a sales value of S$400 or less that are imported by air or post. When an overseas seller or electronic marketplace is GST-registered under the Overseas Vendor Registration regime, GST can be charged at the point of sale. If the seller is not GST-registered and the total CIF value of the consignment exceeds S$400, GST may instead be collected at import.
That means the number to check is not only the product price. Freight and insurance can affect the import value, while the seller's GST-registration status affects whether tax appears at checkout.
Read the checkout before paying
Look for a clear tax line in the final AliExpress order summary and keep the invoice. If GST has been collected at checkout, that record is useful if the carrier later asks for payment. If no GST was charged, do not assume that the parcel can never attract tax on import; the shipment value and import route still matter.
For an expensive order, compare the full delivered price with a Singapore retailer. Local warranty, faster delivery and easier returns can outweigh a modest AliExpress saving. For low-cost accessories, the marketplace may still be attractive even when GST is included.
Where discounts fit into the GST calculation
A sale price is useful only after you compare the tax-inclusive checkout total. If GST is collected at checkout, look at the final order summary after any coupon has been applied; if GST may still be due on import, leave room for that cost as well. For Singapore, the cleanest deal comparison is the amount you expect to pay after tax and shipping, not the percentage printed on a sale badge.
Air and post do not remove the need for good delivery data
Use a complete Singapore address, including unit number where relevant, and a phone number the carrier can reach. Set Singapore as the destination before comparing listings so you see the shipping methods available for that exact product. PoKupar's AliExpress address guide is useful if you are adding or correcting a saved delivery address.
Singapore Customs also publishes separate courier and postal procedures. For a shipment that stops moving, use the tracking events to identify whether it is still with the international carrier, under import processing or already with the local delivery network. PoKupar's AliExpress tracking guide can help interpret those handoffs.
A Singapore-first way to compare listings
Start with three numbers: the product price, the tax-inclusive checkout total and the likely delivered cost. Then compare delivery time, seller history and return practicality. If two listings look similar, the one with clearer tax and shipping information is usually easier to evaluate than the one with the lowest headline price.
Singapore's system is relatively transparent when the checkout is read carefully. The buyer's advantage comes from knowing whether GST is being collected at sale or could still be due at import—and keeping the evidence to show which treatment applied to the order.
