Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so AliExpress buyers can now compare euro-denominated offers more directly with many other EU shops. The European Commission confirms the fixed conversion rate used for the changeover was €1 = 1.95583 Bulgarian lev. By September 2026, the compulsory dual-price-display period has ended, making the euro the practical reference for current price comparisons.

The currency change is not the only 2026 update that matters for overseas orders. Since 1 July, the EU has applied a temporary €3 customs duty per item to low-value consignments up to €150 arriving from outside the EU, with VAT handled separately.

The euro removes one comparison step

A familiar-looking euro price makes comparison easier because current offers can be judged against many other EU shops without a separate lev-to-euro calculation. The product page is still only the starting point: check the final amount after VAT, shipping, duty and discounts.

Item count is the new catch on low-value orders

For baskets containing several inexpensive products, the new per-item duty can reduce the benefit of combining many small purchases. Warehouse origin matters too: a listing dispatched from an EU warehouse can follow a different import route from one shipped directly from China, so confirm the “ships from” location before paying.

If a promotion changes the decision, check the current AliExpress promo codes and then recalculate the whole euro total instead of adding products just to make a discount look larger. The number of items can matter more than the percentage shown on the coupon.

For Bulgarian buyers, 2026 simplified currency comparison but made basket structure more important. Judge the offer in euros, then check item count and origin before deciding whether the price is genuinely lower.
